The artist has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the United Kingdom's small concert spaces.
Fender was given the award on 16 October as his latest record the album was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.
He has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.
"I personally wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."
Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.
In the last year, top acts including the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.
Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 small stages across the UK.
The donation helped venues that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.
Additional spaces obtained funding support in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and fans.
"The idea that money from shows in large arenas helps the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.
Fender is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.
In they earned the prize in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, frontman Cocker declared that the band would give their winnings to the non-profit War Child.
During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her award among several charities, like the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.
"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they needed better apparatus," she told the media.
In recent years, the band contributed their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their group, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.
Also 1994 winners the group contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the condition.
"The victory was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected somebody else's life."
Recently, the trust revealed it had saved a couple of small stages in the South East, by placing them under local control.
The first in that area and the other in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the buildings.
