RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
