Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
